The results are in! You voted in your thousands and here we profile your winners of the 2014 KS Awards

At the end of May, a special ceremony was held at the MBS Show, Olympia in order to celebrate the 2014 Kindred Spirit Awards and to present this year’s certificates to the winners. As ever, you gave your full support to the event – we enjoyed hearing you clapping and cheering the names of the nominees, runners-up and winners as they were read out by KS co-editors, Claire Gillman and Tania Ahsan. It was great to feel the wonderful atmosphere around the main stage that was created in large measure by you, the KS readers, and by the vociferous fans of the various nominees.

Renowned psychologist and author, Dr Robert Holden hosted the ceremony and gave a rousing introduction in which he spoke about the ethos behind the awards and about the mission of Kindred Spirit magazine. He did a sterling job of building the tension before he announced each category of the 2014 awards and we are very grateful to him for his polished and enthusiastic performance.

The Results

You voted in your thousands for this year’s awards and we’d like to thank you for your passionate support of your favourite writers, musicians, personalities, healing centres/retreats, community initiatives and spiritual enterprises, all of whom have contributed so much to holistic living. The competition was exceptionally close, and all the nominees received hundreds if not thousands of votes, but sadly there could only be one winner in each category.

The one award that was not open for public voting but decided upon by the editors was the Lifetime Achievement Award 2014. It was a great honour to announce Louise Hay as the winner of this prestigious award and to be able to recognise and celebrate the important work she has done during her long and productive lifetime in promoting spiritual living.

Music Award Winner

Tim Wheater is an award winning composer, flautist, vocalist, teacher and public speaker. He presents his inspirational music and talks all over the world and has over 20 albums to his credit.

An important part of Tim’s work is to teach the healing effects of sound. He learnt this from his own difficult personal experience. After suffering a traumatising and debilitating condition that left him paralysed and which stubbornly failed to respond to conventional treatments and remedies – Tim made the ultimate discovery that the vibrational sound of the voice has a deep healing effect on a mind, body and soul level. He discovered that the easiest way to create vibrational sound was through his voice and, through humming and chanting exercises that he created for himself, he was able to bring about his own miraculous recovery. He discovered that by exercising the voice, it created a complete change on a cellular level.

Over the years, his original recordings have been used globally by leading therapists, healers and communicators to transmit a message of good vibrations and he has won awards for the sensitive use of real organic sounds on his CDs, ranging from his masterful flute playing to his acclaimed voice.

Tim believes that we are being on a precious life journey of discovery of ourselves, our surroundings and our fellow beings. Through experience, he has learned to teach transmutation of fear and negativity into a positive message of peace and inner and outer love.

The Retreat/Healing Centre Winner

The College of Psychic Studies was founded in 1884 by a group of eminent scholars and scientists. Its purpose was to facilitate formal investigation into the psychic and mediumistic phenomena that were such a topic of debate in the Victorian era. With great courage, this group of distinguished people, some notable in science, others from within the ranks of the Anglican clergy, defied the prevailing canons of respectability in order to proclaim to a world of increasing materialism that human personality survives bodily death and that this is capable of demonstration.

As one of the oldest establishments of its kind, the nature of work carried out by the College has evolved to incorporate a more general and widely-based exploration of consciousness beyond matter. The core of their studies retains a strong focus on the development and understanding of mediumship, psychic ability and healing, as well as the growing capacity of science to explain and explore these phenomena.

The College has accumulated a fine collection of specialist books, photographs and documents which have been used and studied by generations of scholars. It also has a distinguished catalogue of artwork from prominent spirit artists including Ethel Le Rossignol and Georgiana Houghton. The College’s lectures, workshops and courses are devoted to increasing awareness and understanding of these truths.

Ethical Business Winner

Wildflower Essences has created a range of English flower essences which can aid and nurture emotional balance and provide valuable aid to help individuals through their personal challenges. At Wildflower, all flower essences are handmade solely from natural ingredients, using only spring water and organic brandy to preserve them. The wild flowers are gathered from woodlands, meadows and secluded riverbanks, but great pains are also taken to promote the growth and spread of wild flowers throughout the countryside. Wildflower cultivate seeds from mature plants and distribute them at other wild sites to try to return more natural flora to the environment.

The growth of farming over the past four decades has contributed to a steep decline in wild flowers throughout the UK and overseas. The use of pesticides and fertilisers, as well as the wide scale clearing of hedgerows, hay meadows and wild flower pastures, has created a huge imbalance to the natural environment in which wild flowers used to flourish. That in turn has had a devastating impact on insects such as bees and butterflies essential for wild flowers to thrive, and on the birds which feed from the insects.

To play a small part in correcting this imbalance, Wildflower invests in beehives to encourage pollination, as well as in the flowers themselves. The hives are not used for commercial purposes but left alone to thrive naturally.

Lifetime Achievement Award Winner – Louise Hay

The winner of the Kindred Spirit Lifetime Achievement Award 2014 was recently dubbed ‘the closest thing to a living saint’ by the Australian media, which gives you an idea of the measure of respect in which Louise Hay is held around the world.

She was one of the founders of the self-help movement back in the 1970s and her first book, Heal Your Body, was one of the first to discuss the connection between the mind and body – it went on to sell in 33 different countries and has been translated into 25 different languages.

After the book was published, she began travelling throughout the United States, lecturing and facilitating workshops on loving ourselves and healing our lives. She was forced to put her philosophies to the test when she was diagnosed with cancer. She developed an intensive programme of affirmations, visualizations, nutritional cleansing and psychotherapy. Not only was she completely healed of cancer within six months, but she also had the basis for her new book, You Can Heal Your Life. Published in 1984, this book explains how our beliefs and ideas about ourselves are often the cause of our emotional problems and physical maladies and how, by using certain tools, we can change our thinking and our lives for the better. It stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for 13 weeks, and reappeared on the same list 20 years later, after her appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

In 1985, Louise began her famous support group, “The Hayride,” with six men diagnosed with AIDS. By 1988, the group had grown to a weekly gathering of 800 people. Once again, Louise had started a movement of love and support long before people began to wear red ribbons in their lapels. It was during this time that she wrote The AIDS Book: Creating a Positive Approach, based on her experiences with this powerful group.

Louise now heads Hay House, a successful publishing company. What began as a small venture in the living room of her home has turned into a prosperous corporation that has sold millions of books and tapes worldwide. In addition, The Hay Foundation is a non-profit organization established by Louise that encourages and financially supports diverse organizations which supply food, shelter, counselling, hospice care and money to those with Aids, battered women and other crises.

At 81, Louise released her first-ever film on her life and work You Can Heal Your Life: The Movie. This remarkable woman continues to lecture around the world, recently returning from trips to Great Britain, Australia and Canada. When she’s not traveling, Louise enjoys painting, gardening, and dancing at her home in San Diego, California.
