How to Host your own Women’s Circle

More and more women are catching on to the Red Tent movement…monthly gatherings with soul sisters to debrief from the month that was. Tanishka explains how this ancient practice enables women to fill their own cup with sisterly support. Discover her top tips for hosting one.

Honour your own energy level
Red Tents are held at new moon, to support women at their lowest emotional and energetic ebb. With that in mind, don’t martyr yourself by expecting your home to look picture perfect before your guests arrival. Candlelight in the bathroom will create ambiance and hide what you don’t have the energy to clean. To find out when the next new moon is, Google or consult a lunar calendar or diary.

Create sacred space to leave the everyday world behind
Acts of beauty heal and uplift our spirit. So too, when we create a designated temple space dedicated to soulful communion we raise the vibration of our home and all who cross our threshold. This can be done with simply and economically with rich red fabrics, sheer scarves placed over lamps, cushions in a circle and a central altar with candles, fresh flowers or a circle of friends statue. You may also like to scent the air with essential oils and ask guests to remove their shoes as they enter.

Educate loved ones this is your time
Maintain privacy for your gathering by ensuring inquisitive kids and partners are kept well away. This extends to attention deficit pets! If hosting your circle at home, you may wish to offer a piecemeal exchange to your family or partner for the imposition of blocking off one end of the house, such as a play date or boy’s night with their closest friends once a month. Many women choose to host their circle in a circular structure away from their living area, such as a bell tent, yurt or tipi.

The truth will set us free
The power of the Red Tent is that everyone takes it in turns to speak their heartfelt truth. To support this intent, set clear guidelines at the commencement of your gathering that ‘what’s shared in circle, stays in circle’. This agreement allows everyone to be 100% authentic and transparent about their genuine thoughts and feelings. The deeper each woman shares about her own insecurities, vulnerabilities and aspirations, the lighter everyone will feel afterwards knowing they are not alone and the closer the bond you’ll create amongst the women.

Create a positive and uplifting experience of sisterhood
I recommend using a deck of divination cards. You don’t have to be Tarot reader, just a simple set of inner guidance cards which enables you to pull a card for the day as an answer to a specific question. You will find oracle decks for this purpose are available at most bookstores and are a great tool to maintain focus in your sharing circle. This involves each woman taking it in turns to shuffle and pull a card from the deck as she asks the Universe for insight into her current challenge. She then is asked to share the card she pulled and speak from the heart how this insight relates to what she is experiencing in her life. This keeps the focus on the lesson rather than the drama so everyone is uplifted with intuitive wisdom rather than drained by the retelling of karma drama.

Stay clear to confront yourself and feel
‘Girl’s Nights’ have often involved being welcomed with a glass of wine or bubbly. Whilst there is a time for letting your hair down with a celebration with the girls, the Red Tent offers a different experience if you abstain from mood altering substances and ‘come as you are’ even if that means wearing your dressing gown rather than masking your true feelings with social chit chat and alcohol. If you do choose to serve alcohol, wait until after everyone has taken it in turns to share and you break for supper…otherwise you’ll scatter the energy and the power of circle will have been lost. How to Host your own Women's Circle
